From Flapper to Cannes...

With the anticipation finally over, The Great Gatsby was finally released last week. Not only did it make its silver screen debut, it opened the world famous Cannes Film Festival, and even the wet weather didn’t stop Hollywood’s finest stepping out onto the iconic red carpet to witness the upcoming best of the best in worldwide cinema.

You may remember that back in March with the release of the official trailer and cast photos, we blogged about the infamous Gatsby glamour with some of our favourite picks of vintage inspired jewellery sure to create a twenties look complete with a contemporary edge. This time we are looking at the style of the female leads of the most talked about film this year from their characters right through to their own red-carpet looks.

Carey Mulligan, the female lead of The Great Gatsby who plays the unconventional character of Daisy, wowed the crowds as she stepped out in a beautiful blush pink Dior gown. With a plunging V neckline, structured lines in the full skirt and the delicate straps of the dress, although simple, looked stunning on her pale complexion, with the subtle pink hue enhanced by a bright red lip.

Carey opted for sophisticated diamond jewellery to accessorise her gown, with drop earrings and a simple yet classic tennis bracelet to complete her red-carpet look. These intricately designed drop diamond earrings exude elegance and would be ideal for accessorising a formal look, or even a beautiful addition to your bridal jewellery on your wedding day. Their beautifully timeless feel also stays true to the Gatsby influence, perfect for any vintage fashion enthusiast.

Carey’s Cannes look was graceful, simple and reflected some of the elegant nature shown in Daisy’s flapper girl style. Extravagant pearls, vivid precious stones and sparkling diamonds were a must for any upper class woman in the 1920’s and ,at a time when denim was only worn by workmen, there was no exception for looking anything less than absolutely glamorous.

This art deco inspired diamond shaped pendant set on a string of freshwater pearls captures the essence of 20’s glamour in every aspect, making it ideal for re-creating your own vintage style.

Isla Fisher, who also stars in The Great Gatsby as Myrtle Wilson, wore a show-stopping red gown from Oscar De La Renta, with a bouquet lace sweetheart and full ruffled skirt.  The glamorous red-head accessorised her dress with a beautiful necklet full of vibrant coloured stones set in 18ct yellow gold. This bold yet elegant jewellery is representative of the classic style worn by upper class 1920’s women. Le Viani® is a beautiful choice for anyone looking to add some vintage sophistication to their look. This striking Strawberry Gold® ring with a large central quartz and diamond halo cluster is set on Chocolate Diamond® and amethyst embellished shoulders, exuding indulgent style to make for a truly Gatsby inspired cocktail ring.

Whilst diamonds, pearls and precious stones feature in a 1920’s look right through to Cannes red-carpet style, vintage inspired watches with a contemporary twist are also a must.

Indulge in Omega elegance with this diamond set rose gold bracelet watch from the Ladymatic collection. Complete with a diamond set bezel and contemporary, warming hues of rose gold, this eye-catching watch represents simplistic and classic style with a luxurious vintage feel.

Diamonds Are Forever

As we enter this year’s matrimonial season, it seems that Keira Knightley will be kicking it off amidst rumours that she is set to walk down a sun-soaked aisle in the stunning surroundings of the South of France this bank holiday weekend, to tie the knot with James Righton – definitely makes my plans seem a little less exciting! It isn’t rare for celebrities to sneak off to secluded locations to wed, or even completely surprise us by marrying in secret, leaving us only with the hope of getting a glimpse of that all important designer dress, or those luxurious rings we are so eager to see!

So with the sun shining and the distant sound of wedding bells in the air, we take a look at some of the latest trends in engagement and wedding rings, sure to add that extra dose of sparkle to your big day.

Tradition rules that the man chooses our engagement ring and fingers crossed it will be a ring that we will fall in love with. However if, like me, you’re a tad picky about what you will be wearing on your finger for the rest of your life, then dropping a few subtle hints on what would make your perfect ring can’t do any harm can it? I mean you have to make sure it’s going to match that dream wedding ring you already have in mind, right? Right!

Keira Knightley’s engagement ring is the epitome of elegance; a single brilliant cut diamond sits simply on a platinum band, giving the option to team with an equally classic plain band or perhaps something with a bit of sparkle. To achieve a Keira Knightly inspired timeless look, then this stunning solitaire from Leo Diamond is the perfect balance of simplicity and style.  With 66 carefully placed facets instead of the standard 58, a Leo diamond gives you that extra radiance and sparkle.

A classic solitaire isn’t for everybody, and even more so in the last year with the rise of vintage inspired engagement rings and the increasingly popular coloured diamonds.  A favourite amongst celebrities are the glamorous art-deco inspired statement rings from Hollywood designer Neil Lane. This white gold diamond cluster is adorned with every girl’s best friend; a glistening emerald cut diamond, surrounded by a halo of diamonds and finished off with diamond shoulders. Every engagement ring needs a wedding ring to compliment it perfectly and Neil Lane have a range of diamond set shaped wedding bands to frame your engagement ring for years to come. With a gentle square shaping at its centre, this wedding ring presents handcrafted couture and will make for an extravagant engagement counterpart.

For a contemporary twist on the traditional white diamond, why not choose a distinctive coloured diamond? This beautiful white gold bridal set features a radiant lemon diamond centrepiece framed with sparkling white diamonds. Unique and beautiful, ring would be ideal for a Summer engagement, to ensure a little piece of your sun-kissed engagement is always carried with you. I’m certainly thinking yellow may be the new white this matrimonial season!

Nautical But Nice

With the first signs of Spring this past weekend, we can finally turn our attention to the prospect of those long-awaited holidays and our summer dreams of being a highflying jetsetter. Ok, so maybe this is just a dream, but we can at least dress like an ultra trendy jetsetter right?

It seems as though I have eagerly awaited Summer since December 26th and now the high street has finally caught up with me!  Packed with our favourite holiday buys, what better time to start preparing for the best months of the year? On the Spring/Summer catwalks, we saw everything from tribal, graphic prints, monochrome to even neon scrunchies! Now that I’m over the trauma of the idea of having to wear a scrunchie again, I’m ready to embrace the cool, ultra stylish and ever favourite trend of nautical.

From Michael Kors, Emporio Armani, Marc Jacobs and Ted Baker, here at Ernest Jones we have a range of jewellery and watches to make sure your wardrobe is Spring ready with lots of nautical goodies, sure to transform your look into every bit the jet set glamour goddess.

Nautical lives and breathes through the blood of Michael Kors, and this seasons collection is portraying bigger, bolder and brighter colours than ever before. Navy and white form the basis of the nautical look, so what happens when we throw some yellow and green into the mix?! Genius, that’s what happens! I can’t get enough of this yellow and white Stripped Jet Set travel Tote. With tan detailing and the iconic ‘MK’ logo, this bag is perfect for fitting in everything from your mobile phone, to your pool side towel this Summer;  we won’t be going to the beach without one! So for every beautiful bag, we of course need a staple watch to keep our tans in check! This Michael Kors white leather strap watch with gold detailing is perfect for adding a little beach chic to your look. Teamed with a little sun-kissed glow, this watch is sure to make you stand out from the crowds.

Gold detailing is key for the nautical trend, whether it be on decorative buttons, bag motifs, or buckles on your favourite pair of sandals.  Dare to colour block? Team a navy maxi, simple white vest and your essential striped beach bag with this statement, gold plated Marc Jacobs watch to give your look a little seaside spin.

You can go stripey or you can go home! Stripes are an essential part of the nautical look, and horizontal stripes do not have to mean beached whale this summer; accessories can be the perfect way to incorporate this key element into your look. This Armani rose gold-plated bracelet, complete with black striped charms, is a great way to give your look a subtle nautical edge this Summer. This bracelet screams cocktails and dancing to me, so teamed with a floaty maxi dress and statement clutch bag, is sure to turn your holiday evening style into an enviable ensemble of ‘straight off the catwalk’ chic.

For a classic red, white and blue look, Chamilia is a great way to create vivid, custom bracelets and ideal for adding a nautical edge to your summer look. For a limited time only, you will also receive a free bead* when you spend over £60 on Chamilia. Another sea-side inspired favourite is of course knots and Ted Baker have embraced this trend with some quirky rope inspired jewellery pieces. This silver plated knot ring is perfect for giving your look a little nautical edge.

Accessorise with Ernest Jones this Spring/Summer for a nautical spin on this season’s style; sure to add jetsetter status to your every look.

Graphics, Neon & Tribal S/S'13 trends!

With snow, ice and brisk winds slowly becoming a distant memory and the sun desperately trying to make an appearance, I think we can finally get away with saying that spring really is trying to arrive; pass me the sandals! Ok, maybe we’re a little keen, but pumps are atleast acceptable, right? Now the clocks have jumped forward, stealing a precious hour of our sleeping time, there is only one silver lining to this cloud and that is the anticipation for those warmer days and longer evenings and starting those oh so important summer plans. I for one, can’t wait to ditch my coat and gloves for some lighter spring/summer options and with so many great ones to choose from, I’m excited! This season we have seen the return of some of my favourite fashion trends including, neon brights, animal print and tribal graphics, which are all key for the creation of your Spring/Summer looks.

With such bold and busy trends it may be difficult deciding the best way to include these in your spring/summer wardrobe. If you’re not quite ready to step out in leopard print, or a neon dress, add a pop of colour with statement jewellery and watches from Ernest Jones to make sure you’re ahead of the fashion pack.

With neon a must, add a minimal splash of colour to your outfit with a statement necklace, a striking watch or eye-catching bag. I can’t get enough of the Cambridge Satchel Company at the moment especially their Fluoro range available in a selection of electric neon colours are sure to stand out from the crowds, perfect for festival season! Whilst a bag is essential for all the necessities, neon accessories that scream simplistic chic are also a great way to incorporate this trend. Marc by Marc Jacobs watches are perfect as they have a great selection of beautifully bright coloured timepieces ideal for finishing off your neon look and of course ensuring you do not miss your favourite festival acts!

Another favourite trend of mine this season is tribal. Indulge in the bold graphic prints and tribal-esque theme with bold, earthy, ceramic and wooden inspired jewellery and watches. This statement necklace from Gucci with bamboo is a simple and sophisticated way to give your outfit a tribal edge.

If you’re after a tribal look that’s a little on the wild side then animal prints are also back this season. This Zebra print Michael Kors watch, with a grey stone set bezel, is an effortless way of giving your outfit a touch of animal inspired glamour. I’m also a huge fan of the tortoiseshell watches; teamed with gold and rose gold detailing, these watches make for the ideal fashion accessory full of safari instinct.

Mr Selfridge Style

If like us you’ve been completely swept away with ITV’s drama Mr Selfidge, you will know what we mean when we say we cannot get enough of the beauty and glamour that oozes from our screens every time we switch on to catch up with the latest dramas of Mr Selfridge, his family and all the people he meets along the way. With the final episode of the series shown on Sunday, full of emotional twists and turns, it’s safe to say I will definitely be mourning the loss of Mr Selfridge on my TV screen… but am extremely excited for its anticipated return!

Set in London in the 1900’s, where make-up is still kept tightly hidden away under store counters, is a world full of custom dresses, fine jewels, exaggerated hats and some of the biggest hair I have ever seen! It seems that this enchanting world of 20th century London leads to a whole host of inspiring ideas, whether it be for your wedding, a gift, or even just a little classic edge to your look. From elegant pearls and eye-catching diamonds to those wonderfully vintage inspired brooches, there is something for everyone at Ernest Jones, sure to add a dash of Mr Selfridge chic to your look.

It seems only right to begin with Ellen Love, an enviously beautiful woman who starts her journey as the ‘Spirit of Selfridges’. Ms Love is the ultimate showgirl, taking on elaborate costumes inspired by the fast paced and glamorous world of showbiz Hollywood that was spilling over from the states. With elegant velvet gowns teamed with fur overlays and beautiful bows, pearls and diamonds are essential to complete this kind of vintage inspired look. Diamond collars and cuffs seem to be a favourite for the upper class women on the show, perfect for adding a lavish decoration to silk gloves. For a contemporary twist on a classic choice, why not layer tennis bracelets to re-create this statement look. Swap the gloves for a shimmering evening dress for a dash of vintage luxury.

Decorative brooches were a jewellery necessity during this time period. Adorning the coats and dresses of London’s finest, intricate filigree and bejewelled brooches were a must. I adore this beautifully feminine Swarovski flower brooch. Add to a Spring/Summer jacket in mint or apricot for a dash of Mr Selfridge style sure to make heads turn.

Pearls are an essential accessory for the perfect portrayal of vintage extravagance. Rosalie Selfridge, who’s look remained subtle but feminine throughout the series, sports beautiful pearl drop earrings to compliment the light pink and beige hues of her ornate gowns.

This week at Ernest Jones we launched exquisite jewellery brand Yoko London, who offer a vast range of stunning jewellery complete with Japanese Akoya and Tahitian pearls. These stunning earrings are perfect for adding timeless style with a modern edge, teaming stunning diamond and cultured pearl drops with a simplistic, contemporary design. With the matrimonial season upon us, these earrings are sure to compliment a beautiful wedding dress perfectly; wear with an up do for statement style, or with your hair loose for a flash of classic detailing.

Lady Mae Loxley settles into the role of the powerful women extremely well in the series, boasting distinctive styles of striking dresses, long coats and audacious feather and bow detailing on those enormous hats! Her style represents the upper class pre-war woman perfectly, with her elegant jewels of diamonds, precious stones and pearls not only being a demonstration of her status, but also an iconic fashion statement - and one that can be altered to fit within our modern fashions.

This Swarovski pendant not only fits with the S/S pastel trend, but also looks as though it could have been pulled straight from the 1900’s! With a bold purple Swarovski oceanic crystal and smaller white crystals combined with a rope style chain, this beautiful pendant would definitely not look out of place on Lady Loxley! Teamed with a chunky knit or even a Little Black Dress, this necklace is sure to add some vintage elegance to your look.

From the Red Carpet to the Aisle

With the Oscar awards ceremony recently held in LA, we were once again witness to Hollywood’s elite stepping out in the most gorgeous gowns. This year we saw some beautiful bridal inspired dresses, making it a must that we look to the stars for some tips that can be taken straight from the red carpet to the aisle.

Whether you’re looking for a traditional dress or contemporary gown, the red carpet is always a great place to look for ideas and inspiration to add some Hollywood glamour to your Big Day. From Jennifer Lawrence to Amy Adams, we saw some of LA’s finest wearing gowns that had a little matrimonial inspiration delicately integrated; and of course we cannot miss out the beautiful jewellery they accessorised with.

Jennifer Lawrence wore a drop-waist Dior Couture gown to the Oscars, one we’re thinking was full of luck as she went on to win The Best Actress award! Although she took a slight tumble on her way to collect her award, she still looked graceful as ever and I’m pretty sure that gown could make any accidental mishap look completely beautiful. With her gown she wore a delicate necklace made up of a string of diamonds, contrasted with statement diamond earrings.

These Amanda Wakeley spherical earrings are perfect for adding a contemporary twist to your wedding gown with a chic, statement edge. Teamed with a dress like Jennifer’s with a fitted waist and drop-waist flared tail, these earrings are great for any fashion-conscious bride to be.

For a necklace to capture the elegance of the one Jennifer wore, this diamond collar is ideal. Complete with diamond clusters set between a twisted white gold setting, this necklace is sure to make a lavish addition to a strapless wedding gown. Statement earrings like those of Amanda Wakeley, teamed with a delicately designed diamond collar, is sure to be the perfect accompaniment for any bride looking for a way to introduce a touch of red-carpet glitz into her Big Day.

Zoe Saldana stepped out in style in a couture dress inspired by the Spring/Summer trend of monochrome. This fitted couture gown was complete with decorative floral detailing on the bust, a statement beige belt and a flared monochrome skirt.

To complete her look, Zoe wore elegant drop pearl earrings that provided a stylish vintage aspect to her look. Pearls are a fashion favourite for any bride and look beautifully sophisticated combined with any wedding gown. These art-deco style 9ct white gold pearl drop earrings are perfect for adding a subtle dash of vintage elegance to your bridal look. Wear with your hair down for a subtle flash of pearl chic, or team with a glamorous up do to create an effortlessly timeless look.

Not only did Zoe Saldana opt for traditional pearls, she also did not forget the classic diamond. Zoe flaunted the luxurious designs of Neil Lane on the red-carpet, giving her look that added bit of Hollywood allure.
If you’re looking for a contemporary engagement ring designed with exquisite vintage inspirations and plenty of sparkle, Neil Lane is the perfect choice to start your wedding story with. Whether you’re looking for Nouveau, deco or statement there is a ring sure to reflect your style with a luxury Hollywood edge.
